The water treated at the desalination plant will be transported through a 48" diameter aqueduct to a new 250,000 m3 water reservoir in the industrial area of the RT mine. This pipeline (160 km long), which will transport the water from the desalination plant to the reservoir, will be installed 100% underground.
Two pipelines will distribute the desalinated water from the reservoir to the RT and CH mines (1,800 meters and 22,800 m, respectively). These two pipelines will be located 100% within Codelco's mining districts (therefore, not on public land) and will be mostly installed on the surface.
A total of three pumping stations will be constructed to allow the pumping of desalinated water through the aqueduct. The pumping stations will include automated control systems and a total of six emergency ponds for controlled evacuation of water, if necessary.
Pumping station 3, located at an elevation slightly above 2,000 meters, at the foot of the Andes Mountains, will be fed through a separate system, consisting of a 220 kV switching substation, a 19 km long line connecting the switching substation to the third pumping station of the transmission system.
